How to DM on Instagram: The Complete Guide to Instagram Direct
Everything about Instagram DMs: sending from phone and desktop, Message Requests, group chats, business inbox features, limits - and how creators automate replies.
Instagram Direct is where the platform actually converts - deals, collabs, sales, and support all end up in DMs. Here's the complete guide: the basics, the hidden folders, the business tools, and the automation layer serious accounts add on top.
How to send a DM (all the ways)
- From the inbox: tap the messenger icon top-right → the pencil icon → choose a person → type and send.
- From a profile: tap Message on anyone's profile.
- From a post or Reel: tap the paper-plane icon underneath and pick a recipient - the post travels with your message.
- From a Story: type in the "Send message" box at the bottom. This one matters more than people realize: a Story reply opens a normal conversation thread, skipping the Requests folder entirely.
- From desktop: instagram.com → messenger icon in the sidebar. Full send/receive support, handy for typing longer replies.
Message Requests: the folder that eats DMs
If you DM someone who doesn't follow you, your message doesn't reach their inbox. It goes to Message Requests - a tab behind their inbox that triggers no normal notification. Until they open it and tap Accept, they cannot even see link previews from you. This is why "I DMed them but they never replied" is usually "they never saw it." We wrote a full breakdown with fixes: Instagram Message Requests, explained.
Group DMs, vanish mode, and reactions
- Groups: up to 250 people per group chat; long-press any message to react or reply inline.
- Vanish mode: swipe up in a thread - messages disappear after they're seen. Off by default.
- Unsend: long-press → Unsend removes a message for both sides (they may have seen the notification, though).
Business & Creator inbox features
Professional accounts get a heavier-duty inbox: Primary and General tabs to triage, saved replies (canned answers you insert with a tap), FAQ suggestions that appear when someone opens a chat with you, and message analytics. Useful - but all of it still requires you to be in the inbox, replying by hand.
Instagram DM limits you should know
- Brand-new or small accounts sending many cold DMs quickly hit temporary blocks - Instagram reads bursts of manual outreach as spam.
- For automated messaging through the official API, Instagram enforces its own ceiling - roughly 750 automated private replies per hour per account. Full numbers: how many DMs can you send on Instagram.
- The 24-hour window: once someone messages you (or replies to your Story), businesses have 24 hours to respond with automation before restrictions apply.
The automation layer: replying at scale
Manual DMs stop scaling the day a post takes off - 500 comments means 500 conversations you won't get to. That's what comment-to-DM automation solves: someone comments your keyword, and they instantly get your DM with a link and button, personalized with their username, through Instagram's official API. Every commenter answered, every lead captured, in under 3 seconds each. See Instagram auto reply for how the pieces fit, or the step-by-step setup guide.
